His sister Doris writes; "He stowed away on a ship once to America with his friend. They had to come out of hiding to get food. Were locked up down below. When the ship got to New York they were sent to Elis Island. He contacted a skin infection there. It was a place where immigrants were sent. He got away , and stowed away again on one of the largest ships at that time , the AQUITANIA From New York to Southampton. When the ship got near to shore he dived off and swam to shore to avoid being picked up. A police speed boat picked him up and took him to Bow Street jail . My Dad had to go to bail him out. He'd sent a message to Alfie to say ( come home mother very ill ) actually she had already died , but wanted to tell him in person. When my dad explained the situation to the Police they let Alfie go. It was in the newspaper. ( Plucky English Boy Dives Off The Aquitania To See Dying Mother )".
