The couple were cousins and married in Brighton. On 6th May 1927 couple with child Joseph arrive at New York from Southampton on the Cunard ship 'Aquitania' with husband described as a 'Alien Veteran' with destination given as Los Angeles CA. Mrs A Reed at 24 Church Road, Hove UK given as their friend. Whilst he had no tickets to LA he had $10.000. Family not admitted to stay and return to England via Liverpool on Cunard ship 'Laconia' arriving 20th June 1927. Arrival address given as 14 Tidbury Road, Hove, Sussex. On both outward and return journey accompanied by mother-in-law Rosetta Garwood and her daughter Sarah.

Enlist in U.S. Army 1917. 1920 census again living with parents at 424 Bowdoin street, Boston. 1st July 1923 arrive at Liverpool on the 'Samaria' giving 27 Cannon Place, Brighton as visiting destination - (home of Aunt Rose Smith (Hall) nee Rees). Return to New York on the 'Tyrrhenia' from Southampton 6th September 1923. On 13th November 1923 traveled over from the USA on the 'Samaria' to Liverpool to marry cousin Rose Horton. Commited suicide age 35 at the time of the birth of his second son. Buried just behind Smith family plot at Marlow Road Jewish cemetery London. Left effects worth £20.00 to wife

'Kildonan Castle' bound for Cape Town, South Africa. Return to England on S.S 'Balmoral Castle' but disembark at the Island of Madeira on the 20th December 1928 with dying sister Sarah. Family arrive at Southampton on the S.S. 'Armadale Castle' on the 31st December 1928 with address given as 37 Elm's Avenue, Eastbourne.
