1901 census living with parents at 19a Laurel Row, Kemp Town, Brighton. Joined the 1/1st Sussex Yeomanry with service no.3450. The Yeomany had moved to Canterbury sometime during August 1914.

On 24 September 1915 the Regiment dismounted, and they sailed with the brigade on the "Olympic" from Liverpool to Gallipoli, landing on 8 October 1915 and once there placed under the command of 42nd (East Lancashire) Division.

By 8 January 1916 the Regiment was evacuated from Gallipoli and moved to Mudros on the Greek island of Lemnos. Aftyer a short stay in Mudros the unit embarked for Egypt in Feb 1916. On arrival in Egypt the Regiment was used on to the Suez Canal defences.

The whole of 42nd Bde moved to join the Western Frontier Force during July 1916, The Battle of Delville Wood was fought from 14 July - 3 September 1916, one of the twelve battles of the Somme. George spent 10 days in a field hospital for aa accidental foot wound from 6th September 1916.

By 3rd January 1917 the Regiment had re-roled to infantry, becoming 16th (Sussex Yeomanry) Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment and came under orders of 230th Brigade in 74th (Yeomanry) Division. George Pumphrey was given service no. No.G/17622.

He was killed 3rd May 1917 as Private in 7 Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Name is shown in Bay 6 on Memorial at Arras, France and also on Brighton, memorial Old Steine. Posthumously awarded British war medal and Victory medal
