Blanche was a widow and Emanuel changed his name to Arthur Gaskell as he is quoted in court as saying he changed his name so that his new wife would not be stigmatized by being associated with his criminal past.
As a 13-year-o boy in 1910 he was arrested for burglary and received 6 strokes of the birch. Registered as a Habitual Criminal he spent many years in jail in various prisons during his life. He also used the name Frederick Jones, Emanuel Martin, Arthur Gaskell and Richard Henry Smith.
