THE JEWISH CHRONICLE. March 31st 1911

" Mr. ELIAS NUNEZ MARTINEZ.

By the death of Mr. Elias Nunez Martinez, the Lauderdale Road Synagogue is deprived of one of its most devoted attendants.

Mr. Martinez, who had nearly completed his seventieth year, commenced his

education in the " Shaare Tikva "Schools, where he subsequently became a master,

and was throughout his varied career was most attached to the congregation of his birth. He was for many years in the West Indies, where he devoted himself to furthering the interests of the various congregations. In Panama, in the days of De Lesseps (unsucsseful canal builder!) his work was much appreciated, and in the Island of St.Thomas he was many years the Minister. Before returning to England he was some time in Tangier as a schoolmaster, and when the Lauderdale Road Synagogue was opened he regularly assisted the late Chazan Fiperno in rendering the services. He was often called upon to assist the Chazanim on High Festivals, and, fact, times up to within a few weeks of his death, and was an exceptionally good 'Tokeah'. The orphan boys and some of the members' children received able tuition at his hands. He regularly attended the Medrash for collective study.Notwithstanding his none too robust health, he was a most cheery companion and full of anecdote.

At no time was he happier than when reading the service, indeed it was a labour of

love for him. Mr; Martinez leaves his son (Mr. F.N. Martinez, now travelling in Central America) and two daughters in South Africa, besides the wife of his old age, to his loss.

He was buried at Golder's Green with the rites of a Levantador, a society which he

was a member. A goodly number attended the funeral to pay their respects to one whom they had always held in the highestesteem."
