Note on Marriage

"Marriage 8.11.1871 at the Synagogue, St. Thomas, West Indies, Rev. E.N.Martinez to Harriet 4th daughter of the late Isaac Symons of London."

Jewish Chronicle December 8th 1871

ST. THOMAS, WEST INDIES.

We hare been favoured with a communication from several highly placed members of the Congregation of St. Thomas containing an account of the recent marriage of their minister, the Rev. Mr. Martinez.

We can-not publish the letter in extenso, as we make it a practice not to give details of ceremonials of this character, which otherwise would inundate our columns, to the detriment of matters of public interest. However, we may mention that the wedding was made an occasion of congregational de-monstration of sympathy with the Rev. Mr. Martinez, and of approval of his efforts for the promotion of concord and good feeling in this unfortunately divided congregation. The "stewards" included members of both congre-gations of Jews, Orthodox and Reform, a great proof of the reverend

gentleman's popularity. His Excellency the Governor graced the nuptial ceremony with his presence. Many Consuls of foreign powers were also present. A choral service was performed, and Mr j. Fidanque acted as officiating minister.

Mr. A. Nunes, Knight of the Dauuebrog, delivered an address explaining the solemnity, of the ceremony. A great number of visitors and spectators assembled, and the day concluded with a display of fireworks at the residence of the president of the congregation, Mr. Maduro.

Mr Martinez filled the post of teacher worthily. - "We understand Mr E.Martinez arrived at St. Thomas on 28th May and on his arrival was met by the president of the Congregation and many congregates on the 2nd June. The reverend gentleman was inducted into office. 7. 7.1871." Address at third marriage; 117 Elgin Avenue (age in index incorrectly given as 36). Became Assistant Reader of Lauderdale Rd Synagogue, London, England from 1896.

THE JEWISH CHRONICLE. March 31st 1911

" Mr. ELIAS NUNEZ MARTINEZ.

By the death of Mr. Elias Nunez Martinez, the Lauderdale Road Synagogue is deprived of one of its most devoted attendants.

Mr. Martinez, who had nearly completed his seventieth year, commenced his

education in the " Shaare Tikva "Schools, where he subsequently became a master,

and was throughout his varied career was most attached to the congregation of his birth. He was for many years in the West Indies, where he devoted himself to furthering the interests of the various congregations. In Panama, in the days of De Lesseps (unsucsseful canal builder!) his work was much appreciated, and in the Island of St.Thomas he was many years the Minister. Before returning to England he was some time in Tangier as a schoolmaster, and when the Lauderdale Road Synagogue was opened he regularly assisted the late Chazan Fiperno in rendering the services. He was often called upon to assist the Chazanim on High Festivals, and, fact, times up to within a few weeks of his death, and was an exceptionally good 'Tokeah'. The orphan boys and some of the members' children received able tuition at his hands. He regularly attended the Medrash for collective study.Notwithstanding his none too robust health, he was a most cheery companion and full of anecdote.

At no time was he happier than when reading the service, indeed it was a labour of

love for him. Mr; Martinez leaves his son (Mr. F.N. Martinez, now travelling in Central America) and two daughters in South Africa, besides the wife of his old age, to his loss.

He was buried at Golder's Green with the rites of a Levantador, a society which he

was a member. A goodly number attended the funeral to pay their respects to one whom they had always held in the highestesteem."
