"Joseph worked with his father as a young boy but never as an adult. He found him a difficult task master who didn't pay well. Joseph Martin worked under Louis Gumprecht of Cannon Street Road, St. George's-in-the-East learning the business of the highly specialized police mortuary photography. Joseph Martin is responsible for taking all the mortuary photographs (except one) of the victims of Jack the Ripper. He carried on this capacity for the Metropolitan Police until 1933. In 1894. His work was photographing the dead." Took over the studio of Louis Gumprecht before 1887 at 11 Cannon Street Road, St George's-in-the-East.
Joseph moved his business to the West India Dock Road, Poplar.
