'Gracia Sigala widow of Daniel Mendoza spent the summer of 1785 in Amsterdam to obtain release from a levirate marriage and to arrange a new one. The negotiations were successfully by her brother, who had joined her for that purpose, and the 24 year old widow and bride to be returned to Surinam where she married within weeks of her arrival. Her return did not go unnoticed: "Recently returned from the fatherland the widow of the late Daniel Mendoza who was obliged to go to the fatherland to obtain Galitsa from the brother of her deceased husband.".
